Johazi – Family Bungalow

We have one family bungalow at Pemba Lodge, called Johazi (dhow, in English). It includes 4 bedrooms, 2 floors, and its own private beach as Johazi is set away from the bungalows along the shoreline.

Johazi is spacious at over 75 sqm, made from palm and thatch, and retains an authentic Zanzibari appearance. Raised on stilts about a metre off the ground to help keep them cool and capture the breeze, with a go-to 1st floor balcony for relaxation and great views.

A large vehanda on the ground floor, complete with hammock and furniture makes for a terrific afternoon retreat.

Inside each room you’ll find a four-poster bed all with mosquito netting, a sofa, a huge desk with a chair, and a lovely bookshelf. All the furniture is made from reclaimed dhow wood so is very solid and chunky. Woven palm leaves line the walls, and the floors are of dark wood; altogether keeping the rooms relatively cool.

Colourful kangas, woven mats and some wall decorations lend character and a touch of individuality. Each room is also equipped with a safe and a full-length mirror.

A wooden door separates the bedroom from the en-suite bathroom, which houses a hot shower, and toilet.
